Definition

Ikigai (生き甲斐, literally “reason to live”) is a concept rooted in Japanese philosophy, popularised in the West by psychiatrist Mieko Kamiya in the 1960s and more recently by researcher Ken Mogi.

It describes the state of deep equilibrium reached when four life dimensions converge:

  • What you love: your passions, what energises you day to day
  • What you excel at: your skills, what you are known for
  • What the world needs: a genuine contribution to others or society
  • What you can be paid for: economic viability

At the intersection of pairs of circles, four intermediate zones emerge:

  • Passion = what you love + what you excel at
  • Mission = what you love + what the world needs
  • Vocation = what the world needs + what you can be paid for
  • Profession = what you excel at + what you can be paid for

Ikigai is the intersection of all four, where everything converges.

Why it matters

Most people are strong in at least two or three zones. Few fully inhabit all four. Yet each partial zone creates a specific deficit:

  • Passion without viability → fulfilment but precarity
  • Profession without meaning → comfort but emptiness
  • Mission without skill → intention but ineffectiveness
  • Vocation without love of the subject → usefulness but burnout

Ikigai is not a fixed destination, it is a practice of continuous adjustment. The Japanese associate it with longevity: knowing why you get up in the morning reduces chronic stress and strengthens resilience.

Concrete examples

Career change: an engineer passionate about education who leaves to become a trainer may not maximise their salary, but if they find a niche where their technical skills are rare and valued, the four circles align.

Entrepreneurship: ventures that last are rarely those driven purely by money or passion alone. They address a real need, draw on distinctive expertise, and are carried by a founder who genuinely believes in what they’re building.

Management: helping each team member identify their personal ikigai is one of the most powerful engagement levers, far more so than a salary increase alone.

Ikigai is not an answer to find: it is a tension to inhabit and refine throughout life.
